Why this sustainability award is just the beginning

Kimberley Caines • September 26, 2025

I still can't quite believe it.

Just over a year ago, I stepped away from journalism after more than a decade of chasing stories and deadlines, not entirely sure what the next chapter would look like.

Acquiring my own business felt exciting but also overwhelming. I wondered if I had what it would take to succeed.

Fast forward, and I've now been recognised with the Sustainability Award at the Sansoniverse Awards.

To receive such a prestigious award so early in my entrepreneurial journey feels surreal, but it also reinforces something important: that when you back yourself and stay true to your values, incredible things can happen.

For me, sustainability has guided every decision I've made since taking on NICO Underwear.

We've introduced a new range of plant-dyed organic cotton underwear, committed to small-batch production to avoid waste, and launched an in-house alterations service so garments can be repaired and worn longer.

These aren't just business choices - they're about proving that fashion can be ethical, sustainable, and successful.

Winning this award is a reminder that people care deeply about the impact of the businesses they support.

It shows that we're moving toward a world where sustainability isn't a niche consideration, but a standard expectation.

Of course, this journey hasn't been without its challenges.

There have been supply chain hurdles, relocation, and plenty of moments of self-doubt.

But what I've learned is that when you put your mind to something, surround yourself with the right people, and keep pushing forward, you can achieve more than you ever thought possible.

I'm deeply grateful to Aaron Sansoni and his team for creating such a supportive community of entrepreneurs, to my coaches Shelley and Mia for giving me the tools and confidence to grow, and to my partner Sam, who has been by my side through every question, every challenge, and every win.

This award isn't the finish line.

It's motivation to keep going - to keep building NICO into a brand that proves fashion can be done differently, and to keep showing that business can be a genuine force for good.
